Tang Tien Bamboo and Rattan Craft Village in Tang Tien commune, Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province is a famous traditional bamboo-weaving handicraft village for a long time. The village has had a career history of over 300 years, at about the period of post-Le dynasty and strongly developed so far.

When visiting Tang Tien commune (Viet Yen district, Bac Giang province) when asking any old man such questions as "when did bamboo and rattan craft start?", we also receive same answer: " From the old days, forefathers passed on this craft to so many later generations that nobody can remember anymore." The children in the commune start to learn knitting right as they can run and play well. Gradually, rattan-and-bamboo-weaving craft seems to soak into the villagers’ flesh and blood generation by generation as the innate ability of each of the people here.
Located in Phuc Tang hamlet, Tang Tien Bamboo and Rattan craft village is just off National Highway 1A, 7 kilometers far from Bac Giang city to the west and adjacent to Bac Ninh province. Viet Yen civilized land of Bac Giang province not only has a famous ancient pagoda named Bo Da – the largest Buddha center of Bac Giang but is also the birthplace of the traditional weaving craft. People here still have a passion for knitting work generations after generations. Arriving in Tang Tien, when enjoying the lively scene whereby all households and people from the old to the young are weaving expertly to create closely-woven baskets, baskets, blinds ..., we can see all the art of knitting, skillful hands of people here.

It is a long time since the peaceful village started to be the destination of many traders and foreign tourists who have the interest in bamboo, rattan and the products made of bamboo and rattan, a logo image of Vietnamese people. Thus, woven rattan and bamboo products have been popular domestic and foreign tourists who seek to visit, cooperate and sign agreements of purchasing products. These traditional woven rattan and bamboo products with diversified designs are popular to customers.

With the trade secret and support of current modern technology, in the strips dying stages, the village artisans have created the products with rich colors, while preserving the strips from termites, keeping products longer and durable. The local typical woven rattan and bamboo products such as table coverings, cushions, pillows, bags, bamboo-door-blinds, teapots, tables and chairs, etc. exported abroad get much interest from customers, especially in Russian, EU, USA markets.

To make a Tang Tien woven rattan and bamboo product, it is an art creative process demanding much meticulous attention over several stages. Bamboo trees are cut into small segments before handing to the workers. They split into the strips as small as a toothpick with the length of 30 to 40 cm, particularly when they split them with hands. However, they split very quickly, skillfully to make equal strips. Then, each bundle of strips is dried. A very important stage is strips dying to make Tang Tien typical products with good color and durability, anti-termite. To create durable products, the artisans weave these small strips into blind with different color threads in combination with strips color to make up the beautiful and durable multi-color products with various designs.

A famous craft village with a long history, its products have almost been all over the world, is now attracting many tourists to discover. Traditional craft development model in Tang Tien commune has become a good example for other traditional craft villages to refer and study.
